The Journey

ABA -Play Based Therapy

ABA

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a type of therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. With ABA, the behaviors that an individual engages in are observed and analyzed to determine why they occur. Once the reason why they occur is determined, interventions are developed to either increase or decrease the behaviors (based on the desired goal). ABA is an evidenced-based treatment for individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Interventions are tailored for each individual and can be focused (up to 15 hours per week) or comprehensive (15-40 hours per week).

Words to Know

Words to know

Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) are the individuals who you will see the most as they will be implementing the behavior intervention and skill acquisition plans. RBTs are highly trained in applied behavior analysis and strictly follow the plans developed by the BCBA. Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) are the individuals who will develop the behavior intervention and skill acquisition plans. BCBAs will meet with you monthly (or more depending on your preferences and the needs of your child) to discuss progress and to conduct family guidance training. Another word you may hear alot is "assent." Assent is when your child understands what is going on (to the best of their ability) and is "okay" with it. We want our learners happy, relaxed, and engaged before we work with them to teach them new skills.

First Steps

First Steps

The journey starts by contacting us to set up an appointment to get your child assessed. The assessment is usually 2 hours long and involves engaging with and observing your child. Don't worry if your child does not want to engage with us a first. We can still gather enough data by observing them and talking with the child's caregivers to start the process of developing a treatment plan. After the assessment, we will discuss potential services and the next steps.

Next Steps

Next Steps

Once the assessment has been competed, your BCBA will develop a treatment plan based on your child's needs. This treatment plan will be reviewed with you prior to starting treatment. One the first day of treatment, your BCBA and RBT will come over to the home to get better acquainted with you and your family. They will engage and play with your child at your child's pace so that assent is never lost (see "words to know" for a definition of "assent").
