The Journey

ABA

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a type of therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. With ABA, the behaviors that an individual engages in are observed and analyzed to determine why they occur. Once the reason why they occur is determined, interventions are developed to either increase or decrease the behaviors (based on the desired goal).

ABA is an evidenced-based treatment for individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Interventions are tailored for each individual and can be focused (up to 15 hours per week) or comprehensive (15-40 hours per week).

Who we work with

At Pillars, we work with a diverse group of children and young adults, each with their own unique strengths, challenges, and learning styles. Our focus includes individuals with a wide range of communication abilities, social skill levels, and behavioral needs. This may include teaching foundational play and language skills, supporting emotional regulation, or helping older learners build independence through daily living and life skills.

We believe it’s our responsibility to tailor our teaching approach to fit each individual’s needs—whether that means using visual supports, games, hands-on activities, or structured routines. Our goal is always the same: to help our learners make meaningful progress while feeling supported, understood, and engaged every step of the way.

First Steps

The journey begins by reaching out to us. We’ll schedule a time to talk about your child or young adult’s needs, your goals, and how we can best support your family. Next, you’ll complete our intake paperwork and gather the required documents, including a referral from your child’s primary care physician and a diagnostic evaluation completed within the last three years. Once everything is ready, we’ll review the documents and submit them to your insurance provider to request authorization for an assessment.

Once approved, we’ll schedule the assessment—typically about two hours long and either in-person or over a video call. During this time, we’ll engage with and observe your child in a comfortable, supportive way. After the assessment, we’ll review the results with you, discuss recommended services, and outline the next steps toward starting therapy.

Next Steps

Once the assessment has been completed, your BCBA will develop a personalized treatment plan based on your child’s unique needs. This treatment plan will be reviewed with you prior to beginning therapy to ensure it aligns with your goals and priorities.

Before services can start, we’ll need to submit the treatment plan to your insurance provider for approval. For families with Medicaid, there’s an additional step: your child’s doctor will need to sign a CCP form prior to both the assessment and the start of services.

Once everything is approved, we’ll schedule the first day of treatment. Your BCBA and RBT will visit your home together to get better acquainted with your family. They’ll spend time engaging and playing with your child at their own pace, creating a relaxed and comfortable environment where trust and connection can begin to grow.
